Ponytail Palm watering, sunlight, propagation & more

by Abby Evans

The Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata) is a popular houseplant known for its distinctive, bulbous base and long, thin leaves that resemble a ponytail. It is native to Mexico and can be found in arid regions with well-draining soil.

To care for your ponytail palm, follow these guidelines:

  • Water: The ponytail palm is drought-tolerant and only needs to be watered when the soil is dry to the touch. Water the plant deeply, but be sure to allow the soil to drain thoroughly. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so be sure to allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

  • Sunlight: The ponytail palm prefers bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun. Avoid placing the plant in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, as this can cause the leaves to yellow or brown.

  • Propagation: The ponytail palm can be propagated by dividing the offsets (small plants that grow around the base of the mother plant) or by planting seeds. To divide the offsets, carefully remove them from the base of the mother plant and transplant them into a new pot filled with well-draining soil. To plant seeds, fill a pot with well-draining soil and plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep. Water the soil and keep it moist until the seeds germinate, which can take several weeks.

  • Fertilizer: Fertilize your ponytail palm once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer label for proper application.

By following these care guidelines, your ponytail palm should thrive and provide a unique, tropical touch to your home.
